Oct 10, 2013 – Bakersfield, CA (north of Los Angeles)
Pimps and human traffickers are really losing out under Proposition 35 which was overwhelmingly passed by California voters in 2012.
Jerome Henderson, 23, was has been sentenced to 32 years and 8 months in prison after attempting to traffic a 13 year old girl to Sacramento from Bakersfield, CA.
His is the first human trafficking case in Kern County since California voters approved Proposition 35, increasing penalties for human trafficking crimes.
Before proposition 35 was passed in November 2012, Jerome would face a maximum of 8 years in prison for pimping a minor. With the plea bargains and legal loopholes, he would most likely serve less than 5 years in prison. Now Jerome and others like him in California can get up to life in prison, and guaranteed at least a few decades in prison.
